This proposal to Pfizer for a new drug contained all the elements of Shakespearian tragedy, comedy and drama and needed an environment to suit. This replica of the Elizabethan London’s Globe Theatre was four times the size of the original and had a capacity of over 3000. It was to be constructed inside the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco. Prefunction activities occurred around the perimeter of the Theatre, inside floor to ceiling banners with etchings of London’s 16th Century Bankside. Whilst the theatre environment harked back to olden times the interior workings were technically sophisticated. The Yard seats for about 300 for Act l were replaced in Act ll by a pool of water with a tracked row boat, islands linked by arched bridges and a drawbridge to the stage. The stage had a annular revolve which carried a video wall on the outer ring and a rotating tower on the inner.
