Breeding Guppies

All my breeding stock is usually kept as trios  (2 females/1male) in 5 ½ gallon or 10 gallon tanks with a sizeable artificial spawning mat for the newborn fry to hide in. Most guppies will eat their fry or at least a portion, so the fry need the cover to survive. Once fry are discovered I net them from the tanks and they are placed in a 2 1/2 gallon tank.  Occasionally I do pull females and utilize breeding traps if I’m trying to maximize my fry survival rate.  I only use breeding traps that allow a female a 1/2 gallon of space. A good idea is to mark your tank with the date a female’s last drop.  Females in their prime should drop every 30-35 days and you can minimize time a female spends in a breeding trap if you choose to utilize them.
