Why is Mondo in mono?
Stereo piano samples can sound very rich. But well-recorded mono samples have important advantages.
Mono samples use half the voices of stereo samples. The K2000 is limited to 24 voices and the K2500 & K26xx have 48 voices. Mono allows more polyphony for sequences and dense arrangements.
The use of mono samples frees up memory for longer samples, higher resolution, and more sampled notes.
Most commercially available stereo piano samples are simply not mono-compatible.
When the left & right channels of typical stereo samples are combined on one channel, phase distortion is often heard (which sounds like bad, spiky EQ) especially in the crucial mid-range of the piano. This is why keyboardists commonly complain that their pianos sound great in their headphones and bad through their single-channel amplifiers.
A quality mono sound is ideal for live performance (both for mains and monitors). It is also a great option for recording projects intended for TV, radio, or hand-held devices where mono-compatibility is needed.
