Between sessions at the keyboard, John finds time to belong to the Western Writers of America, The Author's Guild, Arizona Historical Society. The Arizona Commision on the Arts awarded John a $5000 unrestricted fellowship for excellence in writing. Another notable award was the author of the year given by The Friends of the Branigan Library for Manchado and his friends.
A prolific wordsmith, he has a number of projects available to interested publishers.
John's wife, Penny, is an award-winning potter and watercolorist.
