Japan Society of Fairfield County
Kyoko Ohnishi, founding member
and Benefactor of our Japan Society, and a member of the Society’s
Advisory Committee to the Board of Directors, has appeared in a cable
TV series entitled “American Princess.”
The show, currently running on the “WE”
channel, has 12 young American women
competing for the title of “American Princess.” The contest is to
be judged by a panel of royal experts, headed by Princess Diana’s
butler. All received new wardrobes, complete makeovers and
lessons in behavior and etiquette. After preliminary training in
New York involving English, French and Japanese customs, 9 of the women
are chosen to go to London to undergo a month of “princess” training
there. The winner will wear a tiara, dance with a real prince and
return to the United States with cash, sponsors’ prizes and an official
British title.
Ohnishi-sensei, in her capacity as an
authority and teacher of Japanese language and culture, had the
assignment of instructing the contestants in the niceties of ladylike
deportment, Japanese-style, prior to their traveling to England.
She was filmed as she taught them formal greetings - physical and
verbal, table manners, introduced them to traditional Japanese foods,
and kimono.
