Japan Society of Fairfield County
Sumie 103
How about having your first Sumei lesson at aged 103? The Japan Society
of Fairfield County held a Sumei class at the Nathaniel Witherell
Nursing Home in Greenwich on Jauary 31, 2008. Among the participants
was a 103 year old resident. Even though this was the first time at
Sumei painting for the residents, they achieved excellent renderings of
a bamboo and leaves. The instructors for the class were Mr. Noboru
Uezumi and Ms. Naomi Shima. They were introduced by Mr. Harry
Sakamaki, president of the society. Ms. Junko Uezumi and spouses of the
teachers from the Japanese School were also present to help at this
event. We are very thankful to board member Vicky Hackman who organized
this program with Witherel and their generous donation to JSFC. Everyone had a
very enjoyable time and we are all looking forward to returning to
Witherell for another artistic event.
