Japan Society of Fairfield County
Cultural Program at Waveny Care Center
The
Japan
Society of Fairfield County presented two days of cultural programs at
the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan on Thursday, July 22 and Friday,
July 23.
On Thursday, a performance of a traditional Bon Dance was given on
"Main
Street" in the Village at Waveny. This included an explanation of the
traditions of the Japanese Summer Festival and an opportunity to
participate in a folk dance. Those with mobility limits danced in their
chairs
while others joined the dance circle. At the end of the dance
the audience was given a sample of Mugicha. This is a roasted barley
tea which is consumed in great quantities during the hot summer days in
Japan. Another group participated in a concurrent calligraphy class. On
the
following day a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony was performed,
followed by a Kimono show.
