Japan Society of Fairfield County
Pre-Thanksgiving Banquet
Our organization is unique among Japan Societies in that we sponsor an
annual
philanthropic event, namely a Pre-Thanksgiving Banquet for the
Homeless.
This event allows us to share Japanese culture with people that
are
often overlooked and allows our Japanese members to experience an
American
holiday. It also honors the traditions of both the United States
and
Japan, as world leaders in providing foreign aid. In recent years we
have
run this event in conjunction with Union Enterprises and the people of
Union
Baptist Church. We welcome additional support for this event.
On November 11th, 2007, we celebrated our Society’s 14th annual
Pre-Thanksgiving
Banquet at St. Luke’s Lifeworks’ in Stamford. 2007

The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims in
Massachusetts.
They shared their harvest bounty with their native Indian neighbors,
who
had helped them survive their first winter in the New World. At
this
time we will act in the spirit of that original Thanksgiving by sharing
our
bounty with individuals and families in our community who are in
difficulties
and need friendship and encouragement.
This is a very warm and meaningful event that provides cheer and hope
for
those we befriend as the holiday season approaches. You will find
participating
a truly rewarding experience. This year the Pre-Thanksgiving Banquet
will
be dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Soji Tomikawa, who, with
Madeleine,
faithfully attended, traveling up from New York, and participated year
after
year. Dr. Tomikawa was employed by the United Nations and served
on
our Advisory Board for many years.
Participating members bring a dessert or a Japanese delicacy for
approximately
12 people. In total we feed about 175 people.
