"The aim of Judo is to utilize physical and mental strength most effectively. Its training is to understand the true meaning of life through the mental and physical training of attack and defense. You must develop yourself as a person and become a useful citizen to society."
-- Jigoro Kano, Shihan, Founder of Kodokan Judo
KODOKAN JUDO - The Gentle Way
Maximum efficiency with minimum effort
Tohoku has over 30 Years of Teaching & Competition Excellence
Kodokan Judo is practiced world-wide and, unlike karate, there is only one style of Judo.
Judo is a sport which can be learned at any age and can be practiced throughout your life. It is the art throwing and holding your opponent by using their weight and strength to your advantage. Local Judo Clubs are experiencing a renewed popularity ever since a Massachusetts native won a Bronze Medal in the 1996 Olympic Games and a New York native won a Silver Medal in the 1992 Games. Tohoku Judo Club has been in Somerville for over 30 years and has produced many local, state and national champions. Our Club is a Massachusetts non-profit organization. Instructors and senior members voluntarily teach, coach and maintain the club. Tohoku offers classes for adults and children, male and female. Judo is played and practiced by young and old, male and female, it is a club sport you play individually, competitively and non-competitively. It's not for everyone, but everyone who stays and plays commits to a healthy lifestyle, a great club spirit and a sport which has a worldwide acceptance and tradition. Look into a Judo Club for yourself, for your children, for fun or for competition. Judo is a sport for a lifetime. You'll be surprised how much you get out of it.
