George C. Norton was born in about 1838, and joined the Rome Light Guards, Company A, of the 8th Georgia Volunteer Infantry in May 1861. He was appointed Captain on July 17, 1861. His brother, Charles B. ("Charley") was killed beside him at the Battle of First Manassas, July 21, 1861.

George Norton hosted a reunion of 8th Georgia Infantry survivors in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1901. View a photograph of the 26 members present at this reunion. View a letter on invitation that Norton sent to Benjamin F. Evans, of Company I.

George was one of 4 sons of Reuben S. Norton who joined the Confederacy. Reuben S. Norton was one of the early settlers of Rome, Georgia, and wrote a descriptive, detailed diary of War-torn Rome. Read part of Reuben Norton's journal.
