Biography:

James Mathews Herndon was born on Feb. 26, 1841 and died on Apr 18, 1916. James married Lavinia A. Brandenburg (aka/Blandenburg) on Dec. 11, 1870. Lavinia was born on Feb. 11, 1850 and died on Feb. 26, 1919. They are my paternal great great grandparents (paternal grandfathers maternal grandparents).

James Mathews Herndon enlisted in Greenville, GA on May 18, 1861 in Company D ("Echol's Guards"), 8th Regiment GA Voluntary Infantry, Meriwether County, GA. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He also received a 'slight wound in head' at the battle of Fussills Mill on Aug 16, 1864. He is on the list of those surrendered at Appomatox, VA, April 9, 1865.

He was a certified school teacher in Meriwether County, GA. He and his wife are buried in the Baptist Church cemetery in Alvaton, GA. [see photo below]
