From Dick Bernard

I received a typewritten letter, in Czech, from the mayor of Tabor. Included with his letter was a fairly long article , in Czech, from Historie Tabor, with some photos of Taborska Synagoga, including a photo of its plan dated 1883, and a photo when it was being demolished in 1977.

"I am glad that you enjoyed your last visit to Tabor, and I wish to respond to your suggestion that the Jewish mementoes in our city deserve better visibility. Your recommendations and reminders deserve consideration and at the same time I wish to answer the questions you put to us. The tourist map, which is published by the City of Tabor, has always touched on symbolic or textual mention of the former Jewish cemetery Your request to mention the former synagogue will be honored, and in future maps we will put a symbol of a Jewish memorial directly into the legend. Other maps are published by an independent agency which rarely consults us regarding the contents of their maps. If, in the future, they should do so, we will call it to their attention. Regarding your suggestion of placing the Tabor synagogue into the model town in the Hussite Museum, we consulted the Hussite Museum, specifically Mr. Bratka. The model, which was created the end of the 19th century, when the Tabor synagogue first originated, shows the town as it was at the end of the 17th century! Therefore, the synagogue cannot be placed into the model of the town. In conclusion, I wish to impart the good news that in January of 2001 a book was published titled "Book of the City of Tabor," in which a collective of authors devoted a chapter to the history of the Tabor Jewish community. I will enclose copies of these pages with this letter. Let me assure you that in the future Jewish remembrances in Tabor will receive greater attention, and I am sure that in your next visit to us you will be pleased."

Cordial greetings,
