George Bernard Shaw observed that, “Every profession is a conspiracy against the laity.” According to Steven B. Sample in the Contrarian’s Guide to Leadership, he wasn’t completely wrong: experts and the professions they represent are not always a boon to mankind. Mr. Sample goes on to state that he once read an article that came to this conclusion: It wasn’t until 1931 that the medical profession turned the corner, so to speak, and began to do more net good than harm. Of course there are exceptions and in individual cases good has been done throughout most of History. The trick, of course, is to find the good ones before the Profession as a whole does you in. Science and Technology over the past sixty years have become, and continue to become, more and more tightly fused together. In the medical field many scientists are in fact technologists, in that their research is directed toward developing a specific drug or device. In searching through many of the traditional and official Alzheimer’s sites which you will find in the first two groups of links on my What is Alzheimer’s Web Page, I have been struck by the fact that they seem as though they were all written with a common set of beliefs, goals, and results. All are consistent in their belief that Alzheimer’s is incurable until someone comes up with the magic pill that will save us all. Instructions on how to be a good caregiver to your loved one dominate most of these sites. The last two groupings look at the problem and try to work on the cause of the problem and many cases seem to be making progress. In most of my working life I had been a Technical Problem solver and sometimes an organizational problem solver. One of the points I would emphatically make, especially after making multiple trips to help the same person solve problems is the following: If a system worked for a couple of years it was probably fairly well designed. If this is true we need to find what broke instead of redesigning the system. The task at hand is to find out what has changed after two years of satisfactory operation. The Alternative approaches to attacking Alzheimer’s seem to do a better job cleaning up and repairing the broken parts of the body instead of changing the design of the body with a drug which was not in the original design. Not a perfect analogy, and some of the Alternative Solutions are merely scams. But, some of them seem to work. So I built this page to help me in searching for solutions in a somewhat organized manner. I will update the site as I continue my search and will provide opinions on various solutions as I become more educated and we try to implement the best possibilities. Email me with any suggestion on improving the site and/or observations and results of your use of information. Thanks! Lowell
