How to Market a Small Town

Click for Langford, South Dakota Forecast

This page will be dedicated to my home town of Langford, SD. Even though I left Langford shortly after graduating from High School in the class of '53 - my son Ron would probably say "Is that 1853 or 1953"- there has always been a soft spot in my heart for Langford.

Possibly the main reason for starting this is an attempt to make up for the lack of communication with many of my old friends and relatives. My thoughts have often been with the people with whom I grew up in Langford, but the day to day activities involved with raising a family and making a living - plus procrastination - have conspired to result in my being a very poor communicator.

Another reason to get more communication between those of us who have left Langford might be to develop an interest in providing some more business for the Langford area. This could allow some possibilities for the young people who do not want to leave to make a living. I may be biased, but I have been convinced for years that we need to maintain a small town/rural environment to provide the type of atmosphere which will develope the workers and leaders needed to maintain our world leadership.

A couple of years ago I was sitting in the office of the VP of Information Technology for Kelloggs in Battle Creek, Michigan when he made a statement based upon a very common, but in my opinion, very misinformed misconception. His statement was that we should come up with a plan to move their Network Operations Center to someplace like Mexico or India since all that is needed is some High Speed communication lines and low income workers.

He was right in his belief that it could be located anywhere where High Speed communications lines are available. He was wrong, however, in his belief that the type of people available to run the facility was equally easy to provide. Recently, I had lunch with a group of consultants who were explaining to us how they could come up with a program to help slow down the high turn over and sometimes low productivity of employees in a Network Operations Center in Columbia, MD.

The obvious solution to both of these problems would be a place like Langford where all of the people are "above average in both looks and intelligence".

For those of you interested in Langford, I will maintain a list of Email Address and pointers to various places of interest for those of us interested in Langford. Let me know of other things which might interest you - such as giving each of you an assignment like:

"What did Langford do for Me?" or "What can we all do for Langford?"

If these suggestions sound too much like Senior English, you can let me know that as well!

Thanks for Showing UP! - Lowell
