June 1, 1996. My camp at Trail Camp, less than a mile from Trail Crest and about 12,000 feet vertical.

June 1, 1996. Trail Camp. I will need the rest. The hill over my right shoulder is the approach to Trail Crest. The next day I would climb 1,500 feet in vertical , 1 mile in distance, through snow and ice, with a 75 pound pack while my lungs are still not quite used to the altitude.
