FEB 17, 2007:  Barrow’s Goldeneyes of Winslow Park, Freeport

Blessed with sunny skies and little wind, the Merrymeeting Audubon field trip to Winslow Park yielded most of the target species and a nice surprise.  The following species were viewed from the point.

~50 Mallards

2 American Black Ducks

~300 Common Eiders

~20 Long-tailed Ducks

~30 Buffleheads

~40 Common Goldeneyes

3 Barrow’s Goldeneye males

2 Common Loons

1 sub-adult Bald Eagle on the ice, dining on a Common Eider

6 American Crows, 4 on the ice with the Bald Eagle

20 Herring Gulls

8 Great Black-backed Gulls

14 Dunlin roosting on the ice at the point.

Most of the Goldeneyes could be viewed only by looking directly into the sun.  More Barrow’s Goldeneyes may have been present among the 30 Goldeneyes in that area.  Although we were concentrating on water birds, we couldn’t miss a Northern Cardinal, several American Goldfinches and Black-capped Chickadees along the way.

Deciding not to spend time land birding, the group continued on to Cape Elizabeth, where the following additional species were seen:

Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth

1 White-winged Scoter

1 Red-breasted Merganser

1 Horned Grebe

3 Great Cormorant, flying, with good views of the white pockets on the flanks.

Ring-billed Gull

1 Black Guillemot

Two Lights State Park

10 Harlequin Ducks

Kettle Cove

15 Atlantic Brant
