The Sparrow of Greater Portland - October 21, 2007

Merrymeeting Audubon's search for Sparrows tallied 11 sparrow species.  Nineteen birders lead by Derek Lovitch traveled from Yarmouth to Scarborough, finding:

Chipping, Field (1- Eastern Promenade, Vesper (1 Maxwell's Farm, Cape Elizabeth),Savannah, Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed, Song, Lincoln's, Swamp, White-throated, White-crowned, and Dark-eyed Junco.

Other highlights included an Orange-crowned Warbler along the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh and a ridiculously cooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo sitting on a fence in the South Portland Transfer Station.

Other birds included a group of 50 American Pipets at Maxfield's Farm on Sawyer Road in South Portland, a Pied-billed Grebe and a few probable Pectoral Sandpipers (flushed by a Northern Harrier) off Eastern Road in Scarborough.  Only two other hawk species were seen - Red-tailed and an immature Cooper's.

Three additional warbler species were spotted: Yellow-rumped, Common Yellow-throat, and Black-throated Blue.
