Current Position:

I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in the biology department at the University of Louisiana in the plant physiology lab of Dr. Karl Hasenstein.   The focus of my research is to understand the uptake and transport of a synthetically made compound, 4, 4, 4, trifluoro-3-(indole-3-)butyric acid (TFIBA) in corn roots (Zea mays).  While naturally occurring endogenous hormones such as auxin and ethylene inhibits root elongation, TFIBA has the ability to enhance root elongation. This is the first time seen in plants where a hormone can promote root enlongation.  An interesting note about TFIBA is that its molecular structure is similar to auxin, since TFIBA was synthesized from indole-3-acetic acid, a naturally occurring endogenous hormone.  The only difference between these compounds is a trifluoromethyl and a methylene group.  It is now questioned whether TFIBA functions competitively or inhibit auxin during transport and thus allowing root elongation.  With these antagonistic effects seen in TFIBA and IAA, investigating their actions and understanding their contribution to plant growth and development can further elucidate how plant functions.
