NYC ADA

Political Endorsements - 1998

Governor : NO ENDORSEMENT

Attorney General : Oliver Koppell

Senator : Mark Green

NYC ADA automatically endorses Congressmembers who consistently vote progressively. This year we considered those Congressmembers with a 95% or better ADA rating to be sufficiently liberal. As a result, the following Congressmembers were endorsed by the chapter:

Eliot Engel

Nita Lowey

Carolyn Maloney

Jerrold Nadler

Major Owens

Charles Rangel

Jose Serrano

Nydia Velazquez

NYC ADA has also made endorsements in the following races.

In the 9th Congressional District, currently represented by Charles Schumer:

Dan Feldman

In the 10th Congressional District, currently represented by Edolphus Towns:

Barry Ford

In the 14th State Senate District, currently represented by George Onorato:

Ed Sedarbaum

In the 30th State Senate District, currently represented by Franz Leichter:

Eric Schneiderman

Endorsement Procedure :

In major races, where it is feasible, we try to have the candidates address us in an open membership meeting (we had the gubernatorial candidates address us on June 25th). Where that is not feasible, the screening committee (made up of those board members who opt to be on the committee) interview the candidates and present their recommendations to the board. All board meetings are open to ADA members, and all voting decisions are made by those members who attend (the screening committee makes only recommendations).

Voting Eligibility :

All members of ADA in good standing who have been members for at least 30 days are eligible to vote in ADA membership decisions, which include endorsements, election of board members, and election of officers of the board.
