NYC ADA voted to endorse Vice-President Al Gore for the Democratic Primary on February 23 at our monthly board meeting. Normally decisions in national elections are decided by national ADA, but this time around no candidate was able to garner the required 60% majority of the vote at the National Board Meeting in Washington D.C. in January. However, our chapter Board gave Al Gore 78% of the vote.
The New York primary comes up on March 7th this year, so New York plays an unusually large role in deciding who will become the chosen candidate of each party. Although much of the attention of the media has been focused on the Republican primary, it is still incumbent upon us as liberals to vote and be active in support of the most liberal candidate in the Democratic primary.
While there is still no lack of support for Bill Bradley in the Democratic Party, and even in ADA, we believe that now is the time to get behind one candidate to defeat the Republicans (who, although currently divided, will be very difficult to defeat in the fall - they will undoubtedly raise more than twice as much money as the Democratic candidate). The Presidential race will have repercussions on a local scale as well, especially in the highly anticipated Clinton vs. Giuliani Senate race, where coattails could prove to be crucial to the outcome of the election.
NYC ADA has decided that Al Gore is that candidate. He has a proven track record of years of experience, and he has a fairly liberal voting record for Tennessee as well, with ADA scoring him 100% on consumer issues, education, housing, and social security.
