ADA Takes Part in Voucher Forum in Queens

Assemblywoman and ADA Board Member Barbara Clark organized a forum on vouchers, including representatives from the Emergency Campaign Against Vouchers and the American Jewish Committee, as well as ADA Education Chair Evelyn Jones Rich. Clark's district covers Cambria Heights, Queens Village, Hollis, and St. Albans.

The purpose of the forum was to explain the actual effect of vouchers. "Tuition at some schools is very high and even with the vouchers, parents sometimes are paying half or more to make up the difference," said Clark.

Rich spoke of on the importance of improving the public school system, rather than defunding it by giving voucher dollars to private and parochial schools. "The two things that public schools need above all is a hands-on principal and an effective, vibrant parent-teacher association," said Rich.

The event was covered in the Queens Chronicle (Thursday, October 5, 2000).

Evelyn Jones Rich will appear on Roscoe Brown's program on the City University of NY channel on November 13 at 8:30 AM, 2:30 PM, 8:30 PM.
