"We have an enormous opportunity; it won't be easy. If we effectively mobilize our resources we can elect more progressives to the House and Senate and we can win the White House for Al Gore and for the working families of America."
-Gerald McEntee, at ADA's October 19th Roosevelt-Humphrey Day Dinner

With just a few days left before the election, Hillary Clinton leads Rick Lazio in the polls by a few points. However, we still must make sure to get friends and neighbors to the polls, or we may be stuck with a Senator who was Deputy Whip to Newt Gingrich, and a Senator who would cast his earliest votes to entrust Trent Lott and Jesse Helms with the reins to the Senate. And while Gore looks to beat Bush by a solid margin in New York, the election is still up for grabs nationwide. Every vote counts.
Almost as importantly, Democrats may be able to take back the State Senate this year, which would break the annual deadlock in Albany and allow good legislation to be passed. The conflict between a Democratic Assembly and a Republican State Senate has ensured that no substantial legislation has been passed in decades. The Democrats are now six seats short of a majority.
And New York City is at the heart of the race. Three of the four incumbent Republican Senators from New York can be unseated this year. In the Bronx and Westchester, Republican incumbent Guy Velella faces serious opposition from attorney Lorraine Coyle Koppell, a solid liberal. In Manhattan, longtime Republican Senator Roy Goodman faces opposition from Community Food Resource Center leader Liz Krueger. And in Queens, incumbent Republican Frank Padavan faces being unseated by attorney and veteran Rory Lancman. ADA strongly supports all three challengers, and has contributed to their campaigns. The fourth Republican, Serphin Maltese, is being opposed only by Green party candidate Dorothy Williams-Pereira.
ADAers can make a significant difference in these races, not only by voting, but by encouraging friends, neighbors, and family to vote.
