President Acquitted

Republicans Fail to Muster Even Simple Majority

After a year-long campaign to discredit the President and weaken the presidency, the articles of impeachment passed by the House were voted on by the Senate. The first article was voted down 45-55, with 10 Republicans voting against it; the second vote was 50-50, with 5 Republicans voting against it. All Democrats voted against both articles.

ADA strongly opposed impeachment of the President for the crimes he was charged with, as well as the tactics employed by the Independent Counsel and the Republican majority in the House. We wrote our Congressmembers to urge them to vote against impeachment and to speak out about the unfairness of the process, and when he was impeached, we urged our Senators to do the same. We had a phone bank where we called many of our members and urged them to take action.

Our position was agreed to by the American people and then by a Republican-controlled Senate which could not find a majority to vote for the President's removal from office. Now that the seemingly endless investigation has come to a halt, we look forward to the possibility of discussing issues important to the country.
