Council Elections

On February 16, three new Councilmembers were elected. In Manhattan's Third District (vacated by now- State Senator Tom Duane), Christine Quinn, Duane's former Chief of Staff, won a majority in a four-way race which had been considered to be closely contested. NYC ADA endorsed Quinn last month, and wrote and phoned our members in the district urging them to vote for her. Subsequently she was endorsed by the New York Times. She is hardworking, intelligent, and liberal, and supports ADA positions on rent control, education (opposing vouchers and charter schools), gay rights, and a number of other issues, and we are sure she will make an excellent Councilmember.

In Brooklyn's 48th District, Mike Nelson, chief of staff for State Senator Carl Kruger, defeated ADA endorsee Alan Sclar, as well as the supposed front-runner, Schumer aide Irma Kramer. While ADA did not support Nelson, we believe that he will make a good Councilmember.

In the 50th District (Staten Island & Brooklyn), the Molinari/Giuliani-supported James Oddo beat John Sollazzo (supported by Mark Green and Alan Hevesi). ADA made no endorsement in this race.
