Assistance for Sudanese Immigrants

Over 50 immigrants fleeing the genocidal war in Sudan have settled in the Peninsula area.  They arrived here between 2000 and 2001 from refugee camps in Kenya, Ethiopia and Egypt.  Most came as young adults who had spent years in refugee camps after losing homes and family members to the militia groups terrorizing their villages.

The Peninsula Crime Victim Council is sponsoring a number of activities to assist them.  These include Bible study, medical and dental help, legal guidance, budgeting and financial planning, automobile maintenance and computer literacy.  If you are interested in supporting these programs, please contact us at 757-930-0945 or pcvc@earthlink.net.

Support Group Information

"Finding Your Way Out"

Domestic violence is, unfortunately, very common in our community.  It is a crime that often goes unreported and the victims untreated.  If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, please call 757-930-0945 or email pcvc@earthlink.net to schedule an appointmrnt or to sign up for this support group.  Both counseling and support group are handled with great care for your privacy.

"Finding Healing

Sexual abuse of children is the crime least likely to be reported.  Yet, adults who suffered such abuse as children carry their emotional scars for decades.  If you or someone you know was abused as a child, this support group is for you.  Call 757-930-0945 or email pcvc@earthlink.net for an individual appointment or to sign up for the support group.

Daily Press Interviews Chaplain Cook

Susan Smigielski Acker, reporter for the Daily Press, interviewed our Chaplain and Executive Director.  Her article appeared on April 13th and may be viewed on the Internet at  http://www.wvec.com/news/hampton/stories/wvec_local_032106_penin_crime_victims.49a6253f.html

A couple of corrections are needed:

I am NOT the pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, but a member.  This church has been extremely supportive, giving us office space and meeting rooms for some of our events.

The grant from the United Methodist Board of Global Missions was for my recruitment and training, not for funding.  Lastly, I worked as the defacto Family Life Chaplain while serving in other assignments and was actually assigned as full-time Family Life Chaplain in my last tour before retirement.

Thanks to Susan for a great article and to the Daily Press for giving the space.  Several folks have called as a result of this publicity and are receiving assistance.
