James W. Dale on "Baptizo"
Presbyterian James. W. Dale in his work "Christic Baptism" agrees that all of the following Pauline passages are baptism by the Spirit ("real baptism" as opposed to ritual water baptism). We are curious if Dale was aware that his correct interpretation of baptism eliminated all of the "proof-texts" in the Westminster Confession of Faith!? We give the following quotes by Dale from "Christic Baptism."
Dale says the baptism in Rom. 6:2-4 is "real baptism into Christ"
Similarly he says Gal. 3:26-27 and Col. 2:9-13 are the "real baptism into Christ," and on 1 Cor. 12:13 he says "real baptism makes Christians 'one body,' "
On Eph. 4:5 he says "real baptism is the 'one baptism' "
On 1 Cor. 6:11 Dale comments: "In the passage before us, the washing must be understood as indicative of an exclusively spiritual condition with which water has nothing to do ..."
In his remarks on Eph. 5:26 Dale states: "The Church is sanctfied by the Word, and thereby purified as perfectly as the washing by water ... can purify the object washed by it. ... There is no immediate reference to ritual baptism."
And on Titus 3:5, he says "The work is that of the Holy Ghost and to him it is expressly and exclusively ascribed."
In conclusion, Dale's correct interpretations of these Pauline passages decisively refute the Covenantal arguments that water baptism is a replacement for circumcision.
