Being raised in Chicago, the most important thing to me was, and still is, my family. After graduating
from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1980, I was encouraged by my family to pursue my love of acting and music in Los Angeles.
I think deep down, everyone expected me to be back home within 6 months, but after arriving in LA I
hooked up with a band and was cast in a play almost immediately. The band died a quick death, but the play actually helped
to introduce me to a few actors that opened the door to Hollywood.
Over the next 20 plus years I performed on many TV shows including "Days of Our Lives", "Jake and The
Fatman", "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" and "Touched By An Angel", to name a few.
I was fortunate to be able to sing for Giorgio Moroder for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic on Paul Engemann's
"One World"; recorded with George Grove (The Kingston Trio), Larry Ramos (The Association), Guerin Barry (Sha-Na-Na), Cam
Clarke (The King Family) and many others.
Then one day I happened to pick up the local actor's trade paper and there was an add for "an international
recording group seeking a male vocalist". I submitted a tape of a recording I had made some 8 years previous, and amazingly,
they like it! I met with group; auditioned; and for the next 5 years I recorded and toured as a member of The Lettermen.
The time spent with the group was a wonderful experience, but my son, Robert A. Poynton V, came into
my life and he needed me to stay at home for a while and be a full time dad. I have loved every minute of being with him.
When the time was right, I knew that I would sing again and that time came in 2001 when I joined "The
Diamonds".
Now, my son Bobby enjoys coming to concerts and "hanging out" backstage. He also loves to sing and
is pretty darn good, if I may say so myself. Maybe someday he and I will get to sing onstage together. That would be a dream
come true. In the meantime, I'll keep singing for anyone who will listen.
