The good news is that at some point in the future, we will have software
to assist us in preparing degree audits so that it will be easy to track progress toward degree completion.
The bad news is that we cannot rely upon this convenience now. Students
often request that the registrar tell them what courses they need to take. It is not possible for the registrar
to assume this responsibility for every student. Students should be familiar with their own degree requirements
and how to map a course for success. A secondary resource is the advisor that has been assigned
to you.
Registrar's Policy on Course Advising
Your most important resource is your assigned advisor. Counselors are also available to you in Building 13. The registrar will meet with current students to advise about course
registration only after these requirements have been met:
1. You have determined which catalog governs your course of study,
you may need the help of your advisor or the Records Office to determine your catalog year. (Good students learn early
on to write their names in their catalog and refer to it often. Think of it as your
personal road map to success. If you have lost your RCC catalog, you can view catalogs beginning 2001-02 through
today's catalog on line.)
2. You have photocopied or printed the course requirements listed
for your particular program or major.
3. You have printed your unofficial transcript from WebAdvisor. Your overall GPA will appear at the bottom of this transcript. Remember, you must have a GPA of 2.0 or
better to graduate.
4. You have taken the list of requirements in #2 above and crossed
off each course that has been successfully completed on your transcript. Your advisor will help with course substitution
advice. Do not be afraid to ask questions about your program credits--it may save you valuable time and money.
5. The registrar will not meet with any student who has not made any
effort to establish his or her academic progress.
6. The registrar will not meet with any student for course advising
who has not completed 60% or more of his or her degree requirements. At such an early stage, those
questions should be directed to your assigned advisor.
7. Students who are nearing the completion of program requirements
and have taken the steps outlined above are encouraged to continue working with their advisors and
to submit an Application for Graduation. All RCC students may find the information posted for graduates
to be helpful for academic planning.
