Sunday, June 29, 2008The Supreme Court 2nd Amendment Decision
Letters for Sunday12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, June 29, 2008 Gun decision the only oneThe Supreme Court's decision on the D.C. gun law and the Second Amendment was the only logical conclusion. The 44 state constitutions that provide some form of individual gun rights would be enough on which to base a decision. There was no 70-year precedent that was overturned. The Supreme Court had avoided ever handing down a Second Amendment case that was near a precedent about the militia vs. individual rights. What troubles me is that this was a 5-4 decision, split cleanly between conservatives and liberals on the court. It was an 11th-hour decision. A new Democratic president would appoint liberal judges who would have changed the balance. The outcome of this case, if decided later, would be different – and horrendously wrong-headed.
