This is a very low-maintenance, small, part-shade front corner that has something in bloom nearly 12 months of the year. Though there are a few perennials and bulbs (none of which are blooming in this photo), it is almost entirely shrubs, groundcover and grasses/spiky things, all of which bloom, and most of which can be completely ignored--other than a watering once every week to ten days during the dry spells.

Lower maintenance usually means depending more on shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers than on perennials and annuals, but that doesn't mean going without flowers.

Placing the right plant in the right place, that is, considering mature size and cultural conditions (light, soil, water, etc.), is another tenet of a lower-maintenance landscape.

A very important aspect of a lower-maintenance landscape is to use the principles of organic gardening and naturescaping, working with nature rather than against her.
