SHIELDS have been nationally recognized and used as models by federal, state and local entities including HUD and the Center for Substane Abuse Treatment. In addition SHIELDS has been recognized in special reports by the Children's Defense Fund, the Washington Health Foundation, and the national Econcomic Development and Law Center for its innovative and effective models of service. SHIELDS has also been featured in articles in the Los Angeles Times, Parade Magazine and the Peninsula News and in local and national television features, including a segment on "48 Hours".
* In 1991, SHIELDS received an award from the National Association of Counties for the success of it Genesis Program in serving substance abusing women and their children.
* In 1995, SHIELDS received the C. Everett Koop Award for the most cost-effective community based program in the nation.
* In 1997, SHIELDS was presented a special recognition award from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy for its work with substance abusing families.
* In 1998, SHIELDS received the Inaugural Athena Award for the State of California from the International Athena Foundation in recognition of SHIELDS efforts to empower women in the community
