We are
a performance troop utilizing
fire and
rhythm
in our
performances, availble to bring
jaw-dropping
excitment your gathering or event!
We practice
the ancient Art of Poi, originated by the Maori tribal folk of New Zealand. Both the men and women of these tribes weave basket cages around rocks
the size of one's fist or larger, attached to a rope a couple feet long; with one Poi in each hand beautiful swinging
patterns were developed for the purposes of strengthening one's arm muscles
and whole
body coordination; developing one's power of concentration; demonstrating one's courage (as the rocks were quite dangerous
to heads and other bones at the high speeds obtained with the poi!); meditation, and
as a performance art.
More recently,
using Kevlar wicks woven into cubes or round knots, soaked in flammable fuel and attached to chains with finger straps, the
element of fire has been added with nothing less than spectacular results!
Not only
the double chained poi, but fire artists are also using long flaming staffs, wands, fans, flaming hoola hoops and other imaginative
tools to create fire magick!
Add some
dance, some drumming or other music, some multi-performer choreography
and you've
got...
Soul
Fire Tribe!
Each of
our performers has practiced literally hundreds of hours to meld the memories of the various techniques into our muscles using
non-flaming poi
long before
"flaming up."
We insist
on many safety practices
when we
practice or perform, including
trained
"fire fighter" spotters, guards to separate us from the audience, safe fueling location, fire suppression equipment, frequent
checks of our chains and other fire tools, venue hazard evaluation, crowd distance,
safe non-explosive fuels, healthy
physical
and alert mental condition
and first
aid training.
We
highly recommend that no one attempt these techniques with fire without adequate training and evaluation by a qualified instructor!
