Boomerang retirees

Yes, retirees, you can go home again -- More and more people are returning home after moving away to retirement communities. That's the analysis of Wake Forest gerentologist Charles Longino Jr., in this month's edition of New Choices. He has studied population trends over the past 20 years, and the number of retirees moving to the Sun Belt states is leveling off, while the number leaving the Sun Belt is increasing. Longino Jr. lists a couple of possible reasons for this: those who are forced to return home and get family support for physical and health needs, plus retirees who simply change their mind about their new communities.

Red Cross salutes nurses

The American Red Cross and the American Nurses Association handed out the first national "Nurse Hero" Awards. Amy Reid of Kennersville, North Carolina, was cited for pulling a man twice her size from a burning vehicle. That, despite the fact she was five months pregnant. And Air Force Captain Lon Duncan, R.N., assisted a surgeon during the emergency amputation of a woman's leg in the rubble of the Oklahoma City bombing. Duncan called it nothing special, saying, "When you carry the title nurse, you just do it." (Associated Press, 7 May 1996)

Diet changes may affect blood pressure

Information from a 1984 survey appears to have uncovered a link between diet and hypertension (high blood pressure). Harvard researchers looked at data from over 41-hundred female nurses, and determined that foods rich in magnesium and fiber may help control hypertension. Especially helpful foods included: apples, oranges, prunes and carrots. Other good candidates: spinach, celery, alfalfa, mushrooms and chicken.(Associated Press, 7 May 1996)

Milk may lower risk of stroke

A 22-year study of Japanese men found that drinking milk might reduce the threat of the most common type of strokes. Within the subject group of middle-aged and old-aged men, those who did not drink milk were twice as likely to suffer a thromboembolic stroke as men who downed at least 16 ounces a day. Of course, you won't be surprised to learn that milk-drinking men also had more healthy lifestyles, and that could be the cause for their lower risk of stroke.(Associated Press, 7 May 1996)

Should labels on wine bottles list their health benefits?

Fair is fair. American wine makers have made a request to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms -- let us list the health benefits of wine on labels. Since the government requires warning labels about health dangers, shouldn't wine be allowed to trumpet that moderate drinking may help fight heart disease? The president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union objects, saying any health benefit is "far outdistanced" by the harm caused by alcohol.(Associated Press, 7 May 1996)

Link between certain pesticides and breast cancer?

A coalition of breast cancer groups and the New York State Farm Bureau have agreed to support a bill to create a pesticide registry. Their aim is to provide an accurate report of what pesticides are being utilized in what New York localities. Researchers should be able to see if there is a link between where certain pesticides are used, and where there are higher incidences of breast cancer. (Associated Press, 7 May 1996)
