CARE vs. CURE:

Healing the Environment

September 2002

Care vs. Cure: Healing the Environment, an ecoart show at the historic pump house in Homestead, included artists Maureen Dawley, Steffi Domike, Stephanie Flom, Reiko Goto, Joan Guerin, Carol Kumata, Connie Merriman, Wendy Osher, Indigo Raffel, Cindy Snodgrass and Yuki Yoshida. They created site specific work that could endure the damp conditions of the building and would not require the use of electricity in their construction or maintenance. Cheryl Casteen and Ann Rosenthal performed their “Eco-Confessional” piece for the September 14th opening that attracted well over 200 people, most of whom had never been to the Pump House before.

The exhibition was co-sponsored by Mon Valley Media and the Rachel Carson Institute at Chatham College as part of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, a key publication alerting the world to the dangerous and widespread use of hazardous chemicals in our environment.
