WOMEN OF STEEL

1985, 30 minute color video, Pittsburgh, PA

For many of the women who entered the mills in the 1970s the steel mill was their ticket out of poverty. When they were laid off in the 1980s, they found that the only jobs they could get were those same low-wage, no-advancement jobs they had left ten years before. This video represents this triangle of income and opportunity-and the physical and emotional adjustments the women of steel had to make in their transitions. Three of the four producers are former steelworkers.
