Results of Area Christmas Bird Counts 2005

The Bath Christmas Bird Count was held on December 17, with temperatures in the mid-thirties and light winds.  Seventy seven species were seen on the count day with one additional (Fox Sparrow) reported during count week, down from the average number of species (81).

 

New species for the count was Blue grosbeak found in Georgetown.

 

Other Arrowsic-Georgetown highlights included a Merlin, a Common black-headed gull, and the count’s only Northern gannets and Northern Harrier.  The Sebasco-Westpoint portion of Phippsburg produced 12 Barrow’s goldeneyes and the counts only Carolina wren.  Small Point contributed six species not seen elsewhere including an American Woodcock and Rough-legged hawk.  Five Islands-Reid added Killdeer, Wood duck and Northern Pintail.  A lone Red-bellied woodpecker was seen in the Popham area along with the count’s only Pine siskins.

 

Other species “lingering” included four Belted-kingfishers, forty-four Bonaparte’s gulls, two Red-winged blackbirds.

Brunswick/Freeport CBC took place on December 31.  The following results do not include Merepoint, Pennelville or Harpswell Neck.  75 species were seen with one great surprise.  A SNOWY OWL on Mere Point.  "Good Birds" included Greater Scaup,  four Belted Kingfishers, one Red-shouldered Hawk, Pine and Evening grosbeaks.  The Brunswick/Topsham Peregrin Falcon obliged us in his favorite perch.
