To reduce impact on surrounding
area, tent pads are constructed in areas which have too much slope for
sleeping. This insures that camping will only be done on the prepared
tent pads. By arranging these tent pads a short distance from an access
trail, there will be reduced foot traffic between sites which should
result in the area retaining a more natural appearance. This approach
is being adopted in many parts of the AT and is in use at Springer
Mountain, Gooch Mountain Shelter, and near Blood
