Behind the Scenes

My first career was as a freelance camera assistant, in Los Angeles and then Baltimore, working on feature films, television, documentaries and commercials.

It was a great first career for a writer. I traveled a lot. From L.A. to Hawaii, from the Big Sky of Montana to the rural villages of Hong Kong, I saw the world and learned about the people in it. And six years on "Homicide: Life on the Street" gave me an insight into urban life that I never would have known by just reading about it in the newspaper.

At 40, I made a career change to writing. Now I write and report full-time for a weekly newspaper and also write freelance. When I'm not writing for someone else I write fiction.
