Annual WPA Summer Workshop in Denver rocks . . . literally

As hosts of the annual Council of Writing Program Administrators Summer Workshop, the University of Denver's writing program pulled out all the stops to make the event not only intellectually stimulating but just plain fun. This year, I had the pleasure of being the "junior" member of the leader duo, with my colleague Susan Mlller-Cochran, who ran the workshop with Greg Glau in Tempe, Arizona. Doug Hesse and his colleagues at DU did a terrific job of organizing the workshop logistics, especially considering that we had the largest turnout (40) of any WPA workshop in the organization's history, with participants hailing from 24 states and Canada and representing a wide array of institutions, including community colleges, small liberal arts colleges, large research universities, and HBCUs. Each day, the gang rode light rail from downtown Denver to the beautiful campus of DU, where the meetings took place in the buidling that houses the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management. It turned out that the location was not a random choice, as the food was all prepared by expert culinary students whose standards were extraordinarly high. Social highlights of the event included a bountiful meal at a Denver brewery that also hosted several dozen pool tables (no comments on the group's collective pool-playing ability) and an evening trip to Red Rocks Amphitheater to hear a live blues band as the sun set and watch a movie on an enormous screen under the stars.

Thanks to an amazing group of WPAs for their hard work and a wealth of ideas and experience. This was definitely a highlight of my summer.

Next year, I'm excited to be running the workshop in Minneapolis as the "senior" leader with my good friend Dr. Carol Rutz, from Carleton College.
