Large Munsterlanders

Gun Dog Chat (GDC) Hunt
April 27, 2008 - Haymarsh Hunt Club - Morley, Michigan

On April 27, Dick and four hunting partners that he has met through gundogchat.com traveled to Haymarsh Hunt Club in Morley, Michigan to get in one more preserve hunt before the season closed on April 30.  Haymarsh offers over 1400 acres of Conservation Reserve Program fields, farmland and wooded areas.  The area the GDC group hunted was approximately 320 acres.

Dick said, "It was a great day, the weather was beautiful, although we could have used a little less wind. We had some great dog work from all the dogs, we had five gunners and nine dogs (our 3 Large Munsterlanders, 5 Labs and 1 Brittany) to work with so we just kept rotating the dogs. Quite a contrast to groups of six to eight hunters out there with one dog."

The following photos and comments are from Rick Sheppard.  Unfortunately, he spent so much time taking pictures of the other dogs that he didn't get any of this three beautiful Lab girls (Chelsea, Katie & Abby).  As Rick said, "Once I put dogs on the ground I did not take any more pictures. Guess my mind was on keeping up with three labs at a time."  Well Rick, thank you for the awesome pictures you did take.  Thanks also to you and Brian for your kind compliments on our three Large Munsterlanders.  Dick said it was a pleasure hunting with all of you and your awesome dogs!

Old Dogs "Get er done"

Ruger may be a senior dog in years but all that experience played a big part in the hunt. He had no problem with the heavy cover and proved he could keep up with all of the dogs in the heaviest of stuff. And, Old dogs understand style in their point!!

And he proved himself in some REALLY nasty bushes.

Ruger and Richard’s LM Alli teamed up on a very nice double point

And then there was Gus. He was Richard's old dog. He showed the style of many years and a staunchness on point that was beautiful to watch. Even Sagga, Catherine’s Lab is willing to watch for a VERY short second.

And then Gus put on a very nice display. See how good your eyes compare to his nose. Can you find that bird?

Having a bit of trouble? We can try a little easier picture!!!!

Dick commented that the older dogs really showed their stuff.  "Ruger kept finding birds in the nasty thick stuff!  Even if I hadn't fired a shot, the way the dogs worked made it all worthwhile to me.  Great day in the field with great company."

"Hurry up fall so we can do it again!"

Are you still having a little trouble. Well good ole Gus is pretty patient. It only took me a couple of minutes to find that bird in the field so I could get the picture. How about this one!!!!

Growth of a Bird Dog

Meet Tess. This is Richard Hale's young dog and today she grew by a bunch in her confidence and style.

Not too sure of herself in her first point. She needed some help from dad. Notice the very nice pointing style that Richard is using so that she can learn from him!!!!

She got it all together in a very big way. She slammed to a point a short time later and held it very nicely and with great style.

Dick said she held point on that bird for a long time while Rick got into position for the photo op.

Then to top it off, she got the bird in her mouth and made it a good way back to hand. Dick said, "she needs a little more work on finishing the retrieve."

Brian, Ruger's owner, commented that, "Tess is coming along very well indeed and those LMs are impressing me with their style and love of the retrieve as well."
