The Hartt School HLM 670 The Music of Michael Tippett : To survey the music of Michael Tippett; determine the distinctions of English modern music, and to measure these distinctions against a broader assessment of Modernism. Alongside a formal and ideological investigation of his music and life, and in order to obtain a broader view of modernism and all its manifestations, we will compare and contrast specific works by other modernists (music, literary, visual) whose work influenced Tippett’s, or conversely stood in opposition to it. We will examine the culture immediately preceding his own and measure the pre-modern tendencies of these composers, as well as the music of present day England. APC 662 Contemporary Guitar Literature : To survey the music written for the guitar after 1950 and become familiar with the composers and their techniques. We will explore the philosophies and aesthetics that either resulted in, or were a result of, the music from which it is associated, and the challenges it presents to the performer of contemporary guitar literature. HLM 316 Music from the Middle Ages to Baroque: To provide an overview of the history of music from the eleventh century to the beginning of the Baroque era in the seventeenth century; this includes the major composers, genres, and styles. The music will be considered in the context of the literary, artistic, intellectual and sociological climates of its time. The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts: Arts and Ideas: This course will examine the style and structure of specific objects of art and will explore the aesthetics, philosophies and influences behind the forces of artistic creation. The students will develop a broad based, multi-layered appreciation for the arts through a comparative study of specific works drawn from literature, visual arts and music. Creative Impulse and the Arts: This course will explore the creative impulse, its sources and influences, as well as its various manifestations. The focus of the course will be on the process of artistic creation from the idea to the product in relation to its form and function. Examples will be drawn from the visual arts, literature, music and architecture. Central Connecticut State University: MUS 110 Listening to Classical Music : This course will examine the lives of composers and the musical styles related to each historical period, taking into consideration the composers ethnic and cultural background, as well as the social, political and economic factors that contributed to the development of the style. |
