Teachers and Staff
Laura Byrne (flute, whistle) is one of only a handful of musicians to successfully cross over to Irish traditional music from another discipline. She graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in 1995 for classical flute, but now is highly regarded on both sides of the Atlantic for her proficiency in the Irish traditional style. She teaches Irish flute at Goucher College, at the Catskills Irish Week and organizes an Irish music school in Baltimore.
Pat Egan (guitar, song) is a fine singer and a deft and delicate guitarist. He grew up in Tipperary, Ireland and has been performing for nearly 20 years with groups on both sides of the Atlantic including his performance on the internationally acclaimed recording Music at Matt Malloy's and his solo recording Songs for the Candle and his current work with Chulrua and Hedge Band.
Donna Long (fiddle) began playing Irish music in 1978 when she moved to the Baltimore/Washington area and studied fiddle with Brendan Mulvihill. A pianist since age 5, she is best known for her expressive solo piano, her sprightly accompaniment to Irish fiddler, Brendan Mulvihill, and her work with the band Cherish the Ladies.
Billy McComiskey (mixed instrument repertoire) is a highly regarded player and composer of Irish traditional music. A Brooklyn native, in his early teens he started studying accordion with the late Sean McGlynn from Galway. He won the All-Ireland Senior title in 1986. He formed and played with two legendary trios: Washington DC's Irish Tradition and the internationally acclaimed Trian. He is known on both sides of the Atlantic as an indefatigable session player, teacher and promulgator of the music.
Myron Bretholz (bodhran), a native and current resident of Baltimore, MD, has lent his talents as a percussionist and producer to nearly fifty recordings of Irish, Scottish and other folk music. He has taught bodhran and rhythm bones at many workshops throughout the US and Canada over the past two decades. Myron's relaxed and humorous teaching style has made him an in-demand workshop leader and instructor.
Shannon Dunne (sean nos step) Shannon 's approach to Sean-nos dance combines centuries old steps from Connemara and West Clare with modern rhythms and footwork from her strong background in tap and modern dance. She has studied Sean-nos dance in West Clare with Mick Mulkerrin and Mairead Casey, and has performed and taught at festivals all over the East Coast and the Midwest and is also a member of the Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble.
Peter Fitzgerald (tenor banjo, mandolin. repertoire sessions) Hailing from Navan, Co. Meath, Peter is a mainstay in the Baltimore Irish music scene. A highly respected banjo teacher, he has anchored a long running ceili series at the Emerald Isle and at the famed J. Patrick's Pub in Baltimore for many years.
Marilyn Moore (set dances) is the premier set and ceili dance teacher in the Baltimore-Washington area, guiding dancers through the steps at dances, festivals and workshops across the region and is known for her calm teaching style and in-depth knowledge of the material.
