The Rizzetta Piano Dulcimer is a modern, totally chromatic instrument. Those of you who have heard Sam in concert lately have seen this instrument. Unlike the diatonic dulcimer, tuned with a major fifth across the bridge, the Piano Dulcimer is tuned with a half step across the bridge. The totally chromatic tuning allows playing in any key with equal facility, and makes quick chromatic runs (as encountered in novelty ragtime, for example) much easier. These instruments have a thin mahogany soundboard that gives a sweet, clear sound and still has good response. Although it is possible to fit dampers later, pedal dampers should be considered for making the best use of this instrument's dynamic possibilities.
