Types   of    Events

Volkssporting offers several ways (events) to

help keep yourself in good health. We offer

mainly walking events; but at times may offer

swimming, skating, biking, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing.  In Oregon and

Washington, walks (and other events) are

offered as Hosted Events or as Year-Round

& Seasonal Events.

Hosted Walking Events are normally held

on weekends or special holidays/celebrations.

These walks will have club members at the

start, about midway, and finish of the course

to help you get started and complete it.  The

event will have a start time normally allowing

several hours in which you can start and

adequate time for you to finish.   Normally
there will be a 3 to 5 hour window in which

walkers may start.  In summer, walkers

can normally start between 8 am and 1 pm

and finish by 4pm.  There are exceptions so

please check with the club that is sponsoring

the event for the times of that specific event.

Events are not competitive and times are not kept.  For hosted walking events, walkers will have 3 hours after the last start to finish the walk.

In most hosted walking events, the trail will

be marked with colored arrows and ribbons

designating where the walk goes.  A map and

written directions are also available.  Walks are normally 10 Kilometers (6.2 miles) in length.  Most walking events will also have a shorter 5 kilometer (3.1mile) option for those that may want to walk a shorter distance.  Swims, bikes and other sports will be similar to the walking events when they are held.

Year Round Walking Events (YRE’s) are

Walks that can be walked on any day of the

year.  These walks will have a starting point

where you go to register on your own.

YRE's differ from Hosted Events in some important ways. The trail will not be marked but instructions and usually a map will be there for you to follow the route on your own at nearly any time convenient to you.  YRE's must be completed during daylight hours for safety reasons.

Seasonal Walking Events are similar to

YRE’s except that they are offered in a time

period less that a year.  Many will start

April 1 and end September 30 or as other

conditions (mainly weather) permit a safe

trail.

In the Portland – Vancouver metro area

there is normally a hosted walking event(s)

every weekend.  There are also more than 50

Year Round events that can be walked at any

time.  Every Wednesday a small group does

one of the YRE’s and then goes to lunch after

the walk. All are welcome to attend.  You can

find these events at www.walkoregon.org
