Enid Greene Waldholtz In 1994, Enid won Utah's Second Congressional District seat after spending $1.9 million -- a huge chunk for a House seat. She must have wanted it pretty badly. House Speaker Newt Gingrich thought she had star potential, so he put her on the Rules Committee, a rare assignment for a freshman. Two months later she announced she was pregnant, which was rather special because only a handful of women have ever given birth while in Congress. (Of course, few women of childbearing age have ever been elected.) So things were going pretty sweet for Enid. Then came questions about her campaign finances. A year after her election, Joe, her portly husband of two years (whom nobody liked), disappeared for several days before turning himself in to the police. He was not the rich political operative he'd pretended to be. Enid's campaign was largely financed by huge sums Joe had embezzled from her father. Not only that, but he had embarked on an extensive spending spree with his wife's Congressional credit card. Enid later announced she would file for divorce. Then she held a five-hour news conference to apologize and answer questions. After all the money she had spent to get there, she announced she wouldn't run for reelection. |
