Alfonse D'Amato His mouth had got him in trouble before, and in 1998 it caught up with him. After 18 years as New York's junior senator, Al D'Amato lost his seat to Democrat Chuck Schumer. Over the years, Al had enjoyed strong support from Jewish voters. Among other things, he helped get Swiss banks to agree to pay back Holocaust survivors whose money they had taken during the war. But during the 1998 campaign, his mouth became unleashed and offended many Jewish supporters by calling his opponent a "putzhead." Apparently he didn't know the vulgar Yiddish term means "penis-head." That's not the best way to get elected -- unless you're running in South Park. It wasn't the first time his crude, whiny mouth had made headlines. Appearing on a talk radio show during the O.J. Simpson trial, he did a Judge Lance Ito impersonation that mocked the judge's Japanese ancestry. In 1994, he insulted New York Republican Lieutenant Governor candidate Betsy McCaughey Ross. He joked that she should have sex with New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to persuade him to endorse her running mate, George Pataki. She wasn't amused. She even suggested a couple of years later that she might run against Al. So how's Al's love life, you ask? Not long after he first arrived in Washington in 1981, he and his wife, Penny, split up. They remained separated for 13 years before finally divorcing. Meanwhile, Al has had his share of attractive young women, and he hasn't minded showing them off. In 1995, he held a news conference announcing his courtship of Claudia Cohen, a regular on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. It was a strange event. I mean, who calls the press to announce they've been dating after only a month or so? Al was giddy about the whole thing. He said he felt like the frog who got kissed by a princess. Yeah, I see what you mean, Al. Then the two lovebirds left in separate limos. But the relationship didn't last long. Claudia's wealthy ex-husband, Revlon chairman Ron Perelman, halted child support and alimony payments to punish her for messing around with Al. Claudia had won an $80 million alimony settlement. She didn't want to jeopardize that. Since his 1998 defeat, Al has been seen cavorting around Manhattan with a number of lovely women half his age. One such gal was sex columnist Candace Bushnell, whose dating experiences are chronicled in the HBO series, Sex and the City. Let's just hope Al doesn't show up in an upcoming episode, sprawled half-naked on Sarah Jessica Parker's bed. |
