Bob Packwood Women used to love this guy -- even the feminists. He supported abortion rights, the ERA, equal pay. If the gals at NOW headquarters had taken a vote back in the 1980s, Bob would have won the Congeniality Award. He was clearly their favorite Republican. Bob had been Oregon's junior senator since 1969. But then his career came to a screeching halt when, right after his 1992 reelection, several women came forward to accuse him of sexual harassment. They said he kissed, groped and fondled them in his office. The group included former staffers as well as a lobbyist for the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. Bob suggested his misbehaving was brought on by a drinking problem. He promised to get professional help, but this didn't satisfy the complainants. They called for his resignation. In 1995, the Senate Ethics Committee recommended his expulsion, so he called it quits. Poor Bob. He thought supporting women's rights would help him meet hot chicks. Maybe he needed a smoother approach. Next time, Bob, go slow. Don't come on so strong when you first meet a woman. Join her for a cappuccino at Starbucks. Don't hump her on top of the Xerox machine until at least the third or fourth date. |
