George Pataki

You got to give the guy credit for trying.   New York Governor George Pataki wanted so badly to reach out to female voters.

In 1994, the year he was first elected, he picked a female lieutenant governor, Betsy McCaughey Ross.   She had never held public office.   Her only claim to fame was the hatchet job she did on Bill Clinton's 1993 proposal to overhaul health care.

But Betsy didn't work out the way George had planned.   He thought the pretty blond lady would sit down and keep her trap shut, but she wasn't that kind of gal.   She wasn't afraid of speaking her mind, and even suggested running against George's mentor, Al D'Amato.

So George dumped her, and then she switched to the Democratic Party and tried to run against him in 1998.   But she didn't get far.

Meanwhile, George hadn't given up on a female running mate.   The second time around, he picked New York Supreme Court Judge Mary Donohue.   They seem to get along just fine.   She hasn't given him any lip.

But less than a month after the inauguration, Mary announced that she and her husband were splitting up.   No big deal, right?   Except that their ten-year-old son had to call the cops when they started fighting.   And it wasn't the first time, either.   Mary had neglected to tell George about her little mess before he picked her.   So I reckon Mary and her husband now have to live in separate trailer parks.

Poor George.   He just can't pick them.
