Rev. Fred Phelps Never mind what you heard at church. According to the Reverend Fred Phelps, you can't believe the Bible and not know that God really hates people. This Topeka, Kansas, Baptist preacher isn't shy to admit he despises gay people. In fact, when Jerry Falwell said God hates the sin but loves the sinner, Fred lambasted him. He said, no, God hates the sinners, too, and especially gays. In 1996, he accused Bob Dole of selling out to the "faggot-rights agenda." And he once led a protest against his own alma mater, Bob Jones University -- one of the most right-wing schools in the nation. What did they do that was so wrong? BJU officials decided to allow gay alumni to visit their museum. Well, shame on them! But Fred doesn't hate everything. He loves to protest at funerals for people he doesn't like. When Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, was beaten to death in 1998, Fred and his followers stood outside his funeral, holding signs that said "AIDS cures fags." He also led protests outside the funerals of Bill Clinton's mother (because she gave birth) and Barry Goldwater (because he had a gay grandson). It doesn't take much to tick off old Fred. And he thinks gays should lose their voting rights, and that the world will soon end because of an increasing level of sodomy. Fred used to be a lawyer, but he got disbarred after giving false statements in court documents. Now eleven of his thirteen children are lawyers. But don't think Fred's a complete Neanderthal. He's got his own Web site now. It's called www.godhatesfags.com. |
