Exodus International Can the folks at Exodus International turn water into wine? No, but they can turn homos into heteros. At least that's what they say. Founded in 1976, the Exodus folks claim that 200,000 lives have been changed by the dozens of Exodus chapters spread around the country. They insist their therapy has had a 30-to-40% success rate. Maybe you've heard about them. In 1998, Exodus joined with the Christian Coalition and the Family Research Council to take out full-page newspaper ads proclaiming their ability to convert gay folks. They even had pictures of "former gays and lesbians" giving testimonials on how they had "recovered" and gone straight. Of course, they forgot to mention that their two male co-founders fell in love -- with each other -- then left Exodus, got married, and settled down to start a family. So what's their definition of "recovery?" It might mean abstaining from gay sex or entering a straight marriage -- even though the same-sex physical attraction may still be there. Critics say no such conversions take place, and that there is no evidence to suggest it could happen. One guy who spent 12 years being "cured" by ex-gay ministries said it's nothing more than a suppression process. Now he preaches against Exodus and other ex-gay ministries on the Internet. One gay priest who went through a so-called conversion program said it not only fails, but also pushes gay people away from the Church and destroys their lives. Hey, just because you haven't had a rim job lately doesn't mean you're not gay. Exodus offers workshops to teach gay men how to butch up through athletics. For lesbians, they provide lessons on gussying themselves up with dresses and makeup. I wonder if that will work for my gay dog, Bozo. I knew I shouldn't have bought him that lavender flea collar. And we should have played catch more often. Now all he wants to do is lie around and lick himself. |
